Belleville, Illinois, is a modern city that was built around the people who labored in various industries. Mines, farms, breweries -to name a few- once dotted the landscape which has engulfed the open farm land. Some of these relics of the past still exist as the world around them has changed over time, as well as their uses. For other sites, their demise was the result of so called progress. Belleville, IL embraces its heritage with preservation and museums that are dedicated to the hard work of its citizens. This app highlights a few of the wonderful historical sites on the map that are a part of Belleville's past so that what once was can be visualized and visited. This is merely an initial version of an idea conceived in the Spring of 2011 based on the inspiration of Tom Thompson, a Museum Studies post-baccalaureate student, assisted by Rebecca Seibert-Johnston, also in the Museum Studies program and Masters candidate in the Historical Studies Department. This effort was directed by Dr. Jeff Manuel, professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the Department of Historical Studies and Museum Studies program.
