This application will help bison producer’s determine the extra revenue generated by waiting to add extra pounds on average to the bison transported. Using on-farm information unique to your production, bison producers can determine if waiting an extra two or three weeks would be profitable.

Enter your expect yield, rail price, extra weight per animal transported and the number of animals on a load. As well, enter your costs to gain a pound of bison to determine the increased profit from the load. For instance, if your average carcass yield is 60%, enter 60. If the rail price is $3.50 per pound enter 3.5. If you will feed for an extra 15 days and expect 2 lbs per day in weight gain, enter 30. If you load 49 animals to a truck, enter 49. Finally if it costs you $1.50 for every pound of gain, enter 1.5 then hit the calculate button.

The amount below is the extra profit you should gain by adding a few extra pounds to your load. Be careful that you don’t get your animals too fat, but use this tool to help determine if profits are being lost.
