About Buenos Aires
Argentina’s capital has been referred to as the “Paris of the Southern Hemisphere.” One could guess that the nickname may come from the beautiful Parisian architecture that can be found throughout the city, especially in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood. Or, maybe it was because it was a culture capital during the Roaring 20’s, when tango was danced throughout the streets of San Telmo.
Whatever the reason, Buenos Aires, like its name suggests, is a charming yet bustling city on the western shore of the Rio de la Plata. As the largest city in South America (and only São Paulo’s metro area is larger), Buenos Aires is full of things to do. The city became famous for the sensual tango, so don’t miss a show at any one of the venues spread throughout the city. In Palermo, it’s hard to walk a few blocks without finding a nice bar or club, and the Porteños like to dance until the early hours of the morning. Buenos Aires also features some of the best shopping in South America, and is famous for its leather goods. But, if you enjoy a good steak from time to time, you can’t miss the delicious meat and wine. Order a lomo for a tender, filet-like cut, or an ojo de bife if you prefer a bit more fat, and pair your steak with one of Mendoza’s famous malbec red wines.
Getting there:
-By Air: Most international travellers will come through Ministro Pistarini International Airport, located in the suburb of Ezeiza. A taxi is the easiest way to get to town, but a few bus lines do run from the airport. The Aeroparque Jorge Newbery serves domestic flights and some international flights in South America.
-By Sea: The company Buquebus operates a ferry system that connects Buenos Aires to coastal cities in Uruguay. About 2.2 million people per year take one of these ferries.
Getting around:
-Subway: Buenos Aires features the oldest subway system in the Southern Hemisphere, and some of the cars on the A Line are still the old wooden style. The subway serves most of the popular areas in the city, and is easy to use.
-Taxi: Like any major city, taxis are easy to come by within the city limits, especially in all the popular neighborhoods. Parking is difficult, so renting a car is not recommended.
-Walking: Buenos Aires is a very walkable city, and very safe in most popular spots. Be careful around San Telmo late at night, and in general, avoid dark and deserted areas.
