Primary Mission
Our mission is “To enhance young people’s minds through education, application and exploration of the Performing Arts.”
It further strives to provide each child with a feeling of self-identity and purpose.
Organizational Information
Children’s Theater Project (CTP) was created in 2002 in Rockford, Illinois by a group of devoted artists who recognized the need to promote youth exposure to, and involvement in the Performing Arts. The focus has been on children ages 6 to 18. Our non-profit organization, 501(c)(3), has a Board of Directors. Paid staff includes Directors, Choreographers,
Music Directors, and an Administrative Assistant. We enjoy the benefit of hundreds of hours of volunteer work.
We receive funding per project from local companies, Rockford Arts grants and independent contributors.
Project Description
Children’s Theater Project creates a “play with music” based on works of Broadway musicals adapted for children,
TV musicals and shows from Musical Theater International.
These projects allow children ages 6 to 12 to learn and experience the art of improvisation, pantomime, dramatic arts, script writing, singing, and dancing. Our project allows a “Youth Theater Project” for teens from 13 to 18 years of age. Youth Theater Project (YTP) can further expand their theater knowledge by learning lighting, sound, set design, construction, costumes, make-up, technical assistance, stage management, choreography and box office, while honing their acting skills. It is the goal of this project to educate the participants in all aspects of a musical production.
CTP Productions serve 1st thru 6th graders and YTP Productions serve 7th thru 12th graders. Performances are staged
in downtown Rockford where we reach a diverse audience. All children who are interested in performing are given an opportunity to be a part of our project as we reach out to all areas of the greater Rockford area.
As of 2010, over 11,000 people have attended CTP YTP shows. Our plays strive for “life lessons” that are learned through literature. Evaluation criteria are audience reaction and verbal feedback. This embodies the nature of our project.
