This App walks yacht owners through the process of upgrading their sailing vessel to the safety standards required for ORC Category 1 offshore yacht races. Races such as the Newport to Bermuda race, the Annapolis to Bermuda, the Sydney to Hobart, Auckland to Noumea and many other similar events around the world use Category 1 as the standard for safety. Compliance is useful for both racers and cruisers who want to maintain a safe vessel which is capable of enduring the significant rigors of ocean sailing. Bringing a boat up to a Category 1 safety standard can be a daunting, confusing and potentially expensive task. Fear of the time and expense of the Cat 1 requirements can often discourage sailors from racing offshore. Cruising sailors planning to go offshore should also ensure that their vessels meet the required standard, or at lest make certain they are familiar with the safety standards to make informed decisions regarding their fitout. In New Zealand all offshore-bound boats are required by law to meet Category 1 standards. The biggest problem is the Cat 1 regulations are barely readable in some sections, largely due to the use of legalese and extensive technical descriptions that only a naval architect can decode. We hope to simplify the upgrade process through publishing an app that acts as a sort of cliff notes for the regulations. It takes the boat owner through every major system of their boat in an easy to use tab format, describes and decodes requirements of Category 1 in plain english and provides simple solutions to some of the more confusing requirements. By assuming a typical sailboat used for offshore racing, it cuts out many requirements that would only be applicable to a very small portion of the racing boats, such as multihulls, or very small sailboats (under 26 feet). Great for racers and cruisers who want to ensure a safe, secure, and drama free ocean passage. This is Part 1 which covers the Yacht and its component systems.
