This app will calculate the Check Digit of any GTIN (Global Trade Identification Number).

GTINs may be 8,12,13 or 14 digits long. GTIN-8s are encoded in an EAN-8 bar code. GTIN-12s may be shown in UPC-A, ITF-14, or GS1-128 bar codes. GTIN-13s may be encoded in EAN-13, ITF-14 or GS1-128 bar codes, and GTIN-14s may be encoded in ITF-14 or GS1-128 bar codes. The choice of bar code will depend on the application; for example, items to be sold at a retail establishment should be marked with EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-A or UPC-E bar codes.

For example, a typical EAN-13 barcode for a product in a UK shop or supermarket may be composed of 13 digits and look something like this :

5 060305 811270

In this example 506030581127 (the first 12 digits) would identify the product and the check digit would be 0 (zero).

The check digit helps to ensure that the barcode has been formatted correctly and helps to avoid user input errors in cases where the barcode has to be entered manually instead of scanned.

There are situations where the check digit is missing and it's useful to have a quick way of calculating what it is. That's where this app comes in. It will calculate the check digit of any GTIN barcode for you.

I'm currently working on updating this app so that it will calculate the check digit for a whole host of other types of codes including, but not limited to :

I coded this app to help the people I work with easily calculate SKU (EAN-8 format) check digits as quite often boxes of stock would come into the warehouse with only the first seven product identifying digits of the code on the box and no check digit or scannable barcode. This meant that the box would have to be opened to get to a valid barcode which could be scanned or typed into a HHT for the purpose of a stocktake.

If the box is well taped up with outer and inner boxes to be opened this can become a pain and very time consuming, so I decided to make life a little easier with this app.
