This app is an animator which provides a tool for visualizing the surprisingly intricate behavior of a simple class of two-dimensional discrete dynamical systems. These maps include maps which were studied by Ricardo  Lopez-Ruiz in the 90's.

At one level the app can be regarded just as a black box for producing some fascinating animations. These can be appreciated without any knowledge of the underlying mechanism.

At another level the app can be used by students learning about discrete dynamical systems to provide explicit examples of systems which are easy to define but which exhibit very complex behavior. They illustrate the huge increase in complexity in going from one-dimensional to two-dimensional systems.

The idea for the app comes from a Javascript program available at

www.math.uni-bielefeld.de/~preston/iterates.html

After obtaining the approval of the program's author ithe Javascript code was the starting point for writing this app.
