The Dear JAPAN project began with request that was sent around the world: “Picture book artists, could you please send an illustration and message to help bring hope to the people of Japan?” In answer to this appeal, which was made two weeks after the Great East Japan Earthquake, we received submissions from 136 picture book artists from 25 countries. The artists ranged from new artists who recently won international picture book prizes to famous veterans of the craft.
