Your phone’s touch screen is capacitive and not able to measure pressure. However this application uses a novel technique which involves the laws of Classical (Newtonian) Physics to measure the mass and obtain the weight of an object.

According to Newton’s second law of motion, mass of an object is equal to the applied force divided by the object’s acceleration. By turning on your phone’s vibrator we apply a rotating force to the phone and using the accelerometer, the resulting acceleration is measured. The measurement is repeated with the object placed on the phone screen. Using these two measurements, the mass and weight of the object can be measured.
