A few things that you should know.

- Writing numbers in American English and British English are quite different. British people often add 'and' before the last number while American people often write the cents as a number over 100. For example, you would write out $1281.71 as one thousand, two hundred eighty-one and 71/100 dollars in American English. In British English, £1281.71 should be written as one thousand, two hundred and eighty-one pounds and seventy-one pence.

- In American English, a thousand million is a billion, but in British English, a thousand million is a milliard.

- It is common practice to add the word 'only' after the amount in a whole number. This prevents someone from changing the amount on your cheque.
