Epoch Time Capsules is an Android app that aims to make it dead simple to create Digital Time Capsules full of memories and thoughts for your loved ones. So what is a Time Capsule? A traditional time capsule is a metal cylinder filled with “historically significant” notes and left in a hole to be recovered at a date in the future. Normally this would be 10, 25, or even 50 years into the future. There are many famous examples of time capsules including the Burbank Time Capsule.

These time capsules are all very expensive and require a shovel to retrieve, and we recognise that not everyone has access to a shovel, nor a 50 foot hole in which to store a time capsule. So we created an app to make Digital Time Capsules, a time capsule that exists purely of digital content like photos and notes, and has a flexible open date, so your loved ones won’t have to wait 50 years to see what’s inside!

Unlike their physical counter parts, Epoch Time Capsules can be used for anything, from being used as a thoughtful birthday present (who wouldn’t love a notebook full of mementos from your loved one?), to wedding proposals (imagine the look on your partners face when they realise you’ve been planning to propose all this time?), to maybe giving someone the closure they need from an old relationship (these are the reason I left you..).

So how do I create one?

First you need to download the Epoch Time Capsules app. You will also need to create an Evernote account if you do not already have one. Epoch Time Capsules stores all your content on Evernote for safe keeping until you are ready to release the capsule. Creating a capsule in the app is easy. Once you have logged in using your Evernote account, just click the New Time Capsule button.

All you need to provide to create your Time Capsule is:

A Capsule Name – This name must be unique across all your Evernote notebooks.

A Release Date – The day you want to release the Time Capsule.

A Recipient – The person you want your Time Capsule to go to.

Click the Create Time Capsule button and you are ready to start!

How do I put stuff into my Epoch Time Capsule?

Putting content into your time capsule is easy! From the My Time Capsules page you can click the add note icon to add a simple note with an image into your time capsule. Stuck for ideas on what to write? Use the QuickNote feature to access templates to use for your message.You can also add the Epoch Widget to your Android home screen to make it simple to add content to, or view your favourite capsules!

Because Epoch Time Capsules is powered by Evernote you can also use any other Evernote connected application to add content into your Capsule, just look for the Notebook with the same name as your Capsule, and add your content into it!

How do I release my Epoch Time Capsule?

When your release date arrives you will receive a notification from the Epoch Time Capsule application letting you know that your capsule is ready for release. Clicking on the notification will take you into the app. Once inside you will see a new button showing on the My Time Capsules page called Release! This button will take you to the Capsule Release Page where you can add one final message to your capsule before emailing the capsule out to your loved one.

What does my loved one receive?

Your recipient will receive an email which contains a link to your Epoch Time Capsule as stored on Evernote. They do not need to be an Evernote user to view the content, they can simply view the content online.
