My name is Eva Pohler. I’m a forty-something wife and mother of three living in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas I earned my B.A. in English from Trinity University, my M.A. in English from St. Mary’s University, and my Ph.D. in English from Texas Tech University. I wrote my dissertation on narrative strategies, in which I analyzed the use of voice, point of view, character, plot, and other narrative devices used in twentieth-century British and American literature, informed by narratologists such as Tsvetan Todorov, Gerard Genette, Vladimir Propp, Seymour Chatman, Wayne Booth, and James Phelan. I also took as many classes in creative writing as was allowed at every university I attended and had the honor of studying under Robert Flynn, Nan Cuba, and Walt McDonald.
I currently write fiction for teens and adults and teach writing and literature at a university in San Antonio, where I live with my husband, three kids, two dogs, and two rats (Katniss and Prim). For years I was a den leader and cub master for my sons in Boy Scouts and a troop leader for my daughter in Girl Scouts. I loved those years, but they are behind me, leaving me with more time to read and write.
I’m also an avid reader. I’ve always said I never want to give up reading for writing or vice UtopYA Aphroditeversa. I want to do both. My favorite authors are Tracy Chevalier, Ann Patchett, J.K. Rowling, J. R.R. Tolkien, Suzanne Collins, and Stephanie Meyer. I have too many to name, but those are a handful of them. For example, I’ve read everything by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, and other literary giants whom I also love. And I’ve read single books I adore by authors like Elizabeth Wein, Diane Setterfield, Philippa Gregory, and Katherine Stockett. And my favorite book of all time, though I never read anything else by her, is Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver. And we can’t forget Jeffrey Eugenides’s Middlesex! And what about Khaled Hosseini, Wally Lamb, and Carlos Ruiz Zafron (who created my favorite character of all time, Fermin)? See what I mean?
When I’m not spending time with the family, teaching, reading, writing, or doing home improvement projects, I can be found watching The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, The Middle, and NCIS.
I am the author of two young adult series, The Gatekeeper’s Saga, which consists of The Gatekeeper’s Sons (August 2012), The Gatekeeper’s Challenge (December 2012), The Gatekeeper’s Daughter (May 2013), The Gatekeeper’s House (November 2013), The Gatekeeper’s Secret (April 2014), and The Gatekeeper’s Promise (October 2014) and The Purgatorium Series, which consists of The Purgatorium (December 2013), Gray’s Domain (June 2014), and The Calibans (February 2015). I’m also the author of a collection of adult mysteries called The Mystery Box (August 2012), The Mystery Tomb (February 2014), and The Mystery House (December 2015).
Thanks for taking the time to read about me and my writing! I hope you read and enjoy my books! Don’t forget to send me your fan art and/or fan fiction so I can share it with others here.
