FLIGHT THREATS© ("FT")© is a situational awareness improvement tool for pilots. It will help you make an organized mental model of your flight before you takeoff. You will go through the main aspects of your flight, review the possible expected threats, and think and develop appropriate safety actions. FT has been designed by a current airline captain with the goal of improving pilot’s situational awareness in a simple, easy, practical, and organized manner to contribute to the safety and management of flights. Most, if not all, of the aspects included in FT are factors that most pilots have in their minds and consider before or during a flight. The idea behind FLIGHT THREATS is to go through them in a methodical, conscious, and repetitive way so those factors are already in the pilot’s mind before each flight.FT can be used by pilots of all kinds. From a student pilot making his first flights to a veteran airline captain flying heavy jets.Here is how it works: First, go through the REVIEW YOUR FLIGHT stage to mentally assess the basic aspects of your flight. Which model of aircraft will you be flying? Is it going to be a 737-700 or a 737-800? A 757 or a 767? An A330 or an A340? Will it be a Cessna 172 or a 150? What procedures and limitations are therefore applicable and should you have in mind? Are there high elevations or special procedures to consider? Should you fly an even or an odd altitude? Are there relevant NOTAMS? These are some of the operational items included in this section. A-B-C: Read them, think about them, and evaluate how they affect your flight. You’ll get an overall picture of your flight before you go improving your situational awareness.Then, run through the THREATS IDENTIFICATION tool to spot the expected threats that you think applicable to your flight. Are there crew threats involved? For example, a crew member with low hours on type. How about ATC threats? Does ATC speak your language? Are there any weather issues? Fog, thunderstorms, fronts, etc. FT includes a list of possible threats for you to identify and choose from. Once you have marked the applicable threats, you may review the countermeasures suggested by FT against those dangers. Clearly, the threats and respective countermeasures included do not constitute a full list of the factors that can affect a flight but they do serve as a general guide or template that a pilot can use to organize his thoughts and actions. No tool can replace sound pilot judgment. Finally, you may save your flight -that shall be ordered by route- so that you can retrieve it and use it when you have the same flight, with the obvious editing option to change those factors that are new or different from the saved trip.
