Frogs belong to the group of creatures known as vertebrates (animals with backbones) called amphibians. This means they live in water and on land. The word amphibian comes from two Greek words, "amphi" which means "both" and "bios" which means "life". Amphibians are cold-blooded animals, meaning that their body temperature remains similar to that of the surrounding temperature. Their skin absorbs water into their body so they don't have to drink water to survive.

Frogs have strong back legs that enables them leap forward great distances. The front legs or arms are short. They are used to prop the frog up when it sits.A frog also has webbed feet for swimming but some have suction disks on the tips of their toes to help them climb. Some have large webs to assist them in gliding in the air, almost like flying.

Frogs live mostly anywhere on the Earth except the Antartica. However, most species are found in the warmer tropical countries. You can find frogs in water or near places that have water like ponds and streams. However, some will never go near water except to mate.

Frogs eat mainly of insects, small animals like earthworms, minnows and spiders. Most have a sticky tongue and to catch insects, the frog flips out its tongue rapidly, get the insect and retracts its tongue. A frog will swallow it's prey whole because they only have teeth in the upper jaw and they hunt mostly at night.

The largest frog in the world is the giant or Goliath frog of West Central Africa and can grow up to more than 1 ft long (30 cm). The largest frog in America is the Bullfrog and can grow upto more than 6 inches long.
