The application "Geiger Camera" uses the camera to detect X-ray and gamma rays. This works only with iPhone 3GS and 4. For this it is necessary to obscure completely your iPhone camera with an opaque paper and tap, or If you have an iPhone 4, by putting it simply on a desk, camera downward.
The feature "Alert" available in the first tab allows to detect within 30s the presence of contamination and close radioactive sources above 6.6μSv/h (watches, piece of radioactive metal).
The feature "Measure" allows to make a precise estimation of the rate of radioactivity, in presence of sources or in background radioactivity. It may require several hours in case of low radioactivity as the natural radioactivity.
It's better to let the measure turn during the night and to connect your iPhone on the sector. You can turn off the screen of the iPhone using the hold button above iPhone.
You can save the data at the end of a Measure. The total absorbed dose will be displayed and compared with respect to the dose limit for exposure of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
The exposure limit set by the ICRP is 1mSv/an.
This application has been calibrated and the sensitivity of the iPhone camera was measured using a Geiger counter in the laboratory. We thank Alain Filhol and Yannick Raoul ILL (Institut Laue Langevin) for helping us to highlight the concept and allowing us to calibrate the camera of the iPhone.
