The “HeatRecovery+: self-assessment tool” [app] supports assessment of the potential for waste heat recovery in a business environment.
What is it about?
1. The app allows you to quickly assess relevant technical, financial and regulative conditions important for the economic success of a heat recovery installation in energy intensive industry.
2. The app is build on experiences from a real installation in operation at Finnfjord, a leading ferro-alloy producer in Norway, recovering 340GWh annually enriched by input from various leading energy intensive companies across various sectors in Europe.
3. The app is part of the result of an EU DG Enterprise co-financed project (SILC1)run by EEIP (Energy Efficiency in Industrial Processes) and Finnfjord.
4. The app not only gives you explanations on your individual results but also directs you the more background information (KnowledgeHub) as well as to companies which have been involved in design and technical implementation of the heat recovery installation (EnergyPages).
What´s the objective?
The assessment results and explanations shall support you to set up a project team and conduct a feasibility study internally.
The reasoning
We are very aware that the individual business reality finally decides on the viability of each heat recovery installation one by one. This has to be analyzed using a feasibility study, which in turn represents already a business decision to invest time and money (set up a project team). The app supports the internal decision making process to set-up such a team by providing guidance (structure/framework conditions) and support (explanations, impact of certain conditions).
Heat recovery still represents huge business opportunities, ranging from pure operational expenditure reductions to the use as a energy price risk hedging tool – and at the same time reduces GHG emissions.
The app currently covers only high temperature heat, EEIP has invited the energy intensive industry to join the EU Industrial Energy Recovery Partnership (EU-IERP) following the project to include promotion of use of industrial low and medium heat, and energy recovery from other media (surfaces, chemical gasses and fluids,...). About EEIP
Energy Efficiency in Industrial Processes (EEIP) is a neutral cross-sectoral business & policy platform for industrial energy efficiency in Europe.
Our goal is to improve the functioning of industrial energy efficiency MARKETS. We have a “system” approach assuming that main barriers are originating from the need of different actors working together, e.g. user of energy, financial markets, IT, regulation etc.
Launched at the European Commission in April 2011, EEIP is the first B2PTM ('business to policy') organisation. Set up as a not-for-profit organisation to facilitate open and inclusive dialogue between industry and EU policy-makers, EEIP is financed by its supporting partners, marketing services within the biggest industrial energy efficiency network in Europe, and projects.
EEIP membership is free. Our members include individuals and companies from industrial energy users, technology and services providers, and those working in financing, consulting, policy, research related to industrial energy efficiency. Currently (June 2013) EEIP has more than 30.000 members.
EEIP uses communication, engagement and 'best practice' exchange to enable industry and policy to achieve higher energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing, while, at the same time, enhancing competitiveness for European industries - in other words on improving the functioning of energy efficiency markets.
