WHAT: The Hip Pocket Ease is a mobile device that facilitates interaction between charity groups and their donors.

HOW: The Hip Pocket Ease operates on iOS and Android interfaces. It enables charity groups to promote their cause and to collect donations.

WHY: In 2007 I accompanied a medical mission to Yushu, a small village in Eastern Tibet. The medical need in Yushu is tremendous, but the medical team I was with was limited by a lack of resources. As a result the team constantly worked under the pressures of weighing out the merits of treating one case over another and had to leave some patients to suffer and die without their aid. The team's mission ultimately came to its end, not because all demand had been met and all patients had been cured, because they simply ran out of money. The team's money and supplies, incidentally, were raised in a difficult manner. Back at home in Canada and the US, members of the medical team would auction off trinkets purchased in Tibet, they would request donations from pharmaceutical companies, they would ask their friends and families for donations of money and supplies, and they would dig into their own pockets. The idea behind Hip Pocket Ease is to remove the burden of gathering donations from the doctors so they can focus on practicing medicine. In talking with donors I've learned that people who give want to be able to see where their gifts are dispersed and to meet the recipients, even if this exchange happens virtually.

Here's how Hip Pocket Ease works:

A) Charity Group

(1) Provide a blurb to introduce their organization and their specific aid efforts; (2) make a specific request, ie 2000 pairs of reading glasses, or 20 wheelchairs; (3) arrange with donors to send and receive donations; and (4) keep donors updated and engaged.

B) Donor

(1) Search for an organization to make a donation (can search by organization name, location, or requested donation); (2) contact the charity group to pledge a donation (equipment, medicine, money, or one's own time and effort) and determine how to follow up with that donation; (3) follow the organization or team while dispensing the donation in the field (different members can post blurbs, photos and videos as they have the experience); (4) follow the organization in the future.
