“IEEESurfer” is an application intended for IEEE student members and IEEE enthusiasts, for that reason it had to include links to all the important places, which fall under the IEEE category. This is why a great part of this application is links to websites and specific pages made easily accessible to the app user.
For the “Societies” part, I had to collect the sites of all IEEE societies and their logos. The regions were done in the same manner. All of the pictures and buttons are edited by me to fit the application context and to give the best appearance to the user.
For the news section, I found an open source basic app upon which I built my news activity. The license and details of the used source are present in the application and in its source code. I had to tear the “Sparse RSS” application apart, throw some of it away, and add to it feeds and options that make it fall into the IEEE context of my app. I had to add color changing options so that it fits with the style of my menu. I also modified the widget and notification service to fit into my app.
The used development software was mainly eclipse with the android development tool for all the java code and xml layout creation. Adobe Photoshop was used to edit the buttons and society and region icons to look the way they do. I had to collect individual icons and links to every IEEE society, region and related website.
The used debugging devices where several emulated devices on my desktop pc having android 1.6, 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.4.2. I also tried the application on an android 4.3 x86 virtual machine on my computer. I uploaded the application to one of my friends Samsung Galaxy S4 and tried it there, and it looked even better than the emulator.
To finish the application successfully and get over the many obstacles I faced, I had to Google a lot of stuff and try to find solutions. I had to come up with my own solutions at times, because I couldn’t find ones on the internet, and it was fun but time consuming to do.
In the process of coding this app I learnt to use widgets, providers, Open GL, java.net, Git and GitHub, RSS feeds, xml parsing and a lot more.
This application was a lot of fun to develop. It was my first real android app, and it took me almost 100 hours of work.
I hope you find this app publishable, because I believe it is.
PS: The application is available for French locale too (French Interface).
