Ise Jingu is a sacred place where deities of the sun and nature reside. In Naiku, the Inner Shrine, the most revered of all deities, Amaterasu Omikami, is enshrined. In Geku, the Outer Shrine, Toyouke Omikami is enshrined. Ise Jingu consists of 125 shrines with Naiku and Geku culminating as the head shrines. For over 2,000 years, more than 1,000 sacred rituals and festivals have been held each year in this location. During the last 1,300 years, Shikinen Sengu, the regular renewal of the Grand Shrine, has been carried out every 20 years. It is considered the most important event in the country, where all the Naiku and Geku shrine pavilions are reconstructed and holy vestures and treasures in Naiku and Geku are renewed. Thus, the Japanese peoples' mindset can be seen in these traditions handed down with utmost care for centuries and in these rituals carried out solemnly. They are reflections of human bonds, harmony, prayerful attitude and how the Japanese view nature.
