Allí conoce a Helen Burns, su única y verdadera amiga, y está con ella hasta que muere de tuberculosis poco después. Jane crece y al cumplir los 18 años se marcha de Lowood para continuar con su vida en otra parte. Se anuncia en el periódico y consigue un trabajo como institutriz en Thornfield Hall, donde se tendrá que ocupar de la educación de la protegida de Mr. Rochester, Adele Varens.
