This app displays Japanese clock (wadokei) that has been used in 17th-19th century. The dial of clock is written in kanji (Chinese characters).

In the Edo era, Japan used the variable hour system: six daytime hours from sunrise to sunset, and six nighttime hours from sunset to sunrise. This means the summer daytime hours were longer than the winter daytime hours.

Each hour was named from the Japanese zodiac or numeral as follows.

子 (Ne, Rat), 九つ (kokonotsu, 9th) - midnight

丑 (Ushi, Ox), 八つ (yatsu, 8th)

寅 (Tora, Tiger), 七つ (nanatsu, 7th)

卯 (U, Hare), 六つ (mutsu, 6th) - sunrise

辰 (Tatsu, Dragon), 五つ (itsutsu, 5th)

巳 (Mi, Serpent), 四つ (yotsu, 4th)

午 (Uma, Horse), 九つ (kokonotsu, 9th) - noon

未 (Hitsuji, Ram), 八つ (yatsu, 8th)

申 (Saru, Monkey), 七つ (nanatsu, 7th)

酉 (Tori, Cock), 六つ (mutsu, 6th) - sunset

戌 (Inu, Dog), 五つ (itsutsu, 5th)

亥 (I, Boar), 四つ (yotsu, 4th)
