Read the Finnish national epic Kalevala with this handy phone reader application. Kalevala consists of fifty poems or songs collected in the 19th century by Elias Lönnrot from Finnish and Karelian oral folklore and mythology.

Kalevala is regarded as the national epic of Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala played an instrumental role in the development of the Finnish national identity.

This phone application allows you to read the Finnish original texts from 1849. The application allows you to scroll through the available poems and read their text. The poems that you have already read are marked so that it is easy to see where you left. To scroll the poem text, simply tilt your device.

The fine-art works displayed in the application has been painted by the Finnish 19th and 20th century painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The original works are available for view at the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum in Helsinki, Finland.
