As a teenager, Kojo Rigault enjoyed chart success with Trinidadian band New Creation. Their reggae-influenced version of the Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ reached number four in the European music video charts and broke into the UK Top 40. Back home, they also won a Gem Radio Award for Best Caribbean R&B Group.
Now, more than ten years later and living in West London, Kojo returns – as a solo artist. Recording under the name Kojosound, his first single called ‘I’d Like To Know’, a reggae/dancehall number fused with R&B.Is due to be Released on September 12
“It’s about a boy and a girl having what is supposed to be a casual, platonic dance,” says Kojo. “Only the girl puts so much meaning into the dance that the boy wonders if this is just how she moves, or if she has much deeper feelings for him. So, he’d like to know!”
Kojo, who grew up in Port of Spain, entered the music business after he and four childhood friends appeared on Trinidadian TV talent show ‘Party Time’. They became overnight sensations with their acapella versions of Boys II Men classics like ‘End Of The Road’ and ‘So Hard To Say Goodbye’.
Eventually, they turned to writing their own music and their first single ‘Roll It’ caught the attention of Eddy Grant and his onetime manager Mike Dolan, who signed the band to his fledgling Tattoo Records label. Following the success of ‘Hey Jude’, New Creation toured the UK as opening acts for Ant and Dec.
When the band went their separate ways, Kojo moved to London to work his way up the record industry, first as an A&R scout and then producing rising rap star MC Vapour.
But it was while he was working at legendary reggae label Jet Star that he was persuaded to go back in front of the microphone. A&R manager Dee Leng teamed up Kojo with reggae producer Alchemist, and the result is ‘I’d Like To Know’.
