You can now have the same device on your smart phone or tablet that scientists are using to talk with Bonobo apes at the Bonobo Hope / Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary in Iowa. Each of the over 500 "Lexigram" keys represents a word or concept. As each key is pressed the corresponding word is voiced and added to the sentence under construction. Once a sentence is created it can be repeated or saved in a buffer for later use. Visit “bonobohope.org” to learn more about Kanzi and his family and how they use these Lexigrams to communicate. BH/ IPLS is a non-profit organization. All proceeds from the sale of this app go directly to support the bonobos, so by making this contribution you are helping to provide them a happy home.
More about the Bonobos:
Bonobo Hope / Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary, previously known as Great Ape Trust, is a scientific and cultural treasure located on 230 acres of natural forest and wetlands in Des Moines, Iowa. It houses six bonobos in two major buildings that have been designed specifically for the care, education, and observation of this unique and greatly endangered species.
Bonobos (also known as pygmy chimpanzees) share 99% of the same DNA as humans. They are extremely intelligent and have a great aptitude for acquiring language and learning new skills.
Using Lexigram symbols on laminated charts, computer touch screens, and now tablets and smart phones scientists at BH/IPLS lead by Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh are able to communicate with the bonobos about daily activities, their wants and needs, and their thoughts and feelings.
