AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification for the iPhone and iPod touch
The AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification is the standard classification used by trauma surgeons and physicians dealing with skeletal trauma worldwide. This app is a reference tool that will assist both beginners and experts in classifying any fracture of the long bones. Two pathways allow the beginner and the expert quick access to the information they need.
An introductory text and a section on classification terminology help users familiarize themselves with the classification system and the alphanumeric structure of the AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification.
Functionality:
-Fractures are presented with an enlargeable line drawing, the specific classification code, and clinical information. In most cases a good-quality, enlargeable x-ray is also included
-Fracture subgroups are described in detail for most bone segments (text only)
- The app contains more than 125 accurate line drawings and 90 x-rays. Some x-rays are accompanied by CT scans.
-Clinical information accessible on every screen includes reference material from the book, AO Principles of Fracture Management (2nd expanded edition), and expert information on injuries sourced from the online AO Surgery Reference
-The “Glossary” includes an introduction to the AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification system and an explanation of the specific terminology used
-The detailed list of references enables users to find and access further information, eg, on treatment options of specific fractures in the online AO Surgery Reference
-Fractures can be bookmarked for personalized reference
The AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification has been variously published and named. Some of its elements appeared in the first and second AO manuals. Its first complete version was published in French as the AO Classification: Müller ME, Nazarian S, Koch P (1987) Classification AO des fractures. Tome I. Les os longs. 1st ed. Berlin: Springer-Verlag. Shortly afterwards it was published in English as the comprehensive classification of fractures, both by Müller et al: Müller ME, Nazarian S, Koch P, et al (1990) The Comprehensive Classification of Fractures of Long Bones. 1st ed. Berlin, Heidelberg, New York: Springer-Verlag.
The latest comprehensive publication in print was in 1996 in the form of a supplement to volume 10 of the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, where the numbering of the smaller bones was more complete: Orthopaedic Trauma Association Committee for Coding and Classification (1996) Fracture and dislocation compendium. J Orthop Trauma; 10 (Suppl 1): V–IX, 1–154. The AO Foundation has established a committee to maintain the quality and consistency of the AO/OTA Fracture and Dislocation Classification.
