Add a lock screen widget, and be only a tap away from NFC scans. No need to unlock your device!

If you depend on quick NFC scans throughout the day, you might find this useful. Tapping on the lock screen widget displays full screen activity with wakelock, in order to trigger background scanning of supplied NFC tags. When scan occurs, there is an option to automatically lock your device (requires Device administrator permission).

Jelly Bean 4.2+ only, of course :) Tested on Nexus 4 & 7.
