In an attempt to encourage the youth of South Africa to interact with their heritage, we designed and launched this first-time cultural mobile application on Heritage Day. The app is specifically packaged to modernise traditional information that has usually been passed on verbally, making it relevant to the youth through the use of technology. Its unique user experience allows the user to find and share his clan name and then share it on social media platforms. Examples of clan names are – Madiba (Nelson Mandela), Zizi (Thabo Mbeki) and Msholozi (President Zuma). The power in its execution lies in the fact that the app allows the user to obtain access to his heritage in a quick and easy way. Users are also able to contribute about their own surnames and in doing so ensure that the South African heritage never goes extinct. This multi-lingual app is built in a truly African way, it is insight driven and allows the user to get to better know the people they are working with – just like our brand. It is being suggested that the app could positively influence South Africa’s business culture by allowing you to address an associate by his clan name, thus showing respect and that you took great care in getting to better know that person. The true value of the app lies in the context it is shared. Whilst non-African language users might not understand the explanation of the clan names since it is mostly vernacular, it still shows respect and is a great conversation starter. The app is, in effect, a unifying agent for South Africans and is endorsed by the African Renaissance.
