Native speakers of each language share a common set ofcriteria that allow them to express themselves, and make themselvesunderstood. Of course English has its own, specific criteria, andgrasping them is essential to improving your ability to expressyourself clearly.Prepositions are essential for expressing directions and locations inspace and time, and thus a key component of learning how tocommunicate effectively in English. Prepositions also indicate whethera space should be imagined as a point (zero-dimensional), a line(1-dimensional), a plane (2-dimensional), or a 3-dimensional space.In this Volume 2, we will examine prepositions which express spaces seen two- dimensionally (i.e. as planes). These include in, into, out of, of, through, throughout, across, around, about, between, among, with, within, and without.Prepositions are presented in three stages:1. The basic image,2. Extension of the basic image, and3. Images in contrast.First, discover the basic images that are common to each prepositionthrough the situations and conceptual drawings presented in thepictures. Next, apply to these core images to more abstractsituations. And finally, find the more subtle distinctions among theimages of prepositions by comparing and contrasting similarsituations.The Criteria Approach presents you with a large number of situationsfor you to express in English, and through the experience ofvisualizing these situations, you will naturally find the criteria youneed to use to select the various prepositions.
