Salvador, the most African of the Brazilian capitals, was the first capital of Brazil. with 2.7 million inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the country. Salvador is especially popular during Carnaval, when millions of people come each year for the food, unique blend of African and Portuguese culture, and for the historical buildings from the first years of colonization.

Whoever visits Salvador can’t leave without visiting the Pelourinho and the Historical Center. There, it’s possible to see Baroque architecture, recognized as a Historical Heritage site by UNESCO. Another sight to see is the Elevador Lacerda, which was constructed to link the Lower City with the Upper City and has turned into a popular tourist activity. The public transit in Salvador is based on the roads. The busses are relatively new and comfortable, but they aren’t the most reliable. The city’s subway system is still under construction. To get to the island of Itaparica, use the ferryboat. Renting a car is an economic and comfortable option. The taxi rides to the airport and to the most popular tourist spots are very expensive, so renting a car with a GPS is probably the best way to go.

Salvador is not one of the safest cities for tourists. The Pelourinho neighborhood, for example, should be avoided at night. Avoid dark and deserted places, and don’t bring out your cellphone or camera unless you need to. During the night, take a taxi, and if you rent a car, drive with your windows closed at night.
