The primary function of this first step is to empower the learner with the ability to communicate basic needs such as food, drink and satisfying a want through the use of spoken words and/or imitating communicative actions observed in this application.

Exceptional color photography: The imagery is of children doing what children do: want, need, have and touch, hold, play, eat and drink, each shown with common objects most people have so that every language concept can be recreated, taught and reinforced in real life.There are no illustrations used in The Substance of Language because the learner should be trained to observe other children, think critically about their actions and behavior so that the learner may imitate those actions, participate in the actions and recreate the actions and concepts in the real world with the actual objects depicted.

Blank slate sentence building work pages: This allows the teacher the ability to build on learned language concepts.The color photography depicts children with food, drink, a common object or a common animal thus enabling the introduction of nouns, pronouns and pronoun referents.
