TOWER SmartDriver is a free smartphone app that is designed to reward good drivers. By using the app, and proving you’re a safe and careful driver, you could save up to 20% on your motor premium with TOWER.

SmartDriver will also help you improve your driving by giving you tips along the way.

How it works

SmartDriver collects basic driving information through the numerous sensors within your smartphone, including the accelerometer and the GPS. Information collected – which includes distance, location, braking and acceleration – is then used to determine your driving behaviour. The app will even give you driving feedback!

Once you’ve completed 150 kilometres (over multiple trips of less than 75 kilometres each) you’ll receive a SmartDriver score between 0 and 10 (10 being the highest). The app will also show you how you compare to other drivers on the road. Depending on your SmartDriver score you could earn savings on your premium.

Please note that this app is for use in New Zealand only.

If you have upgraded to the latest Android version 4.4.2 (KitKat) certain handsets may encounter GPS issues with all location based apps including SmartDriver. We recommend researching the recommended actions specific to your handset for improving your GPS experience.

Note: Battery usage - GPS often requires more battery power. If you’re planning a long journey, make sure you have a full battery before you start, and consider using an in-car charger.
