News sentiment is fast becoming recognized as a valuable aid to stock trading and investing. The volume of news stories published on individual companies and markets as a whole by multiple media outlets continues to rise. Making sense of all this data, filtering out what's relevant and important is the job of a whole research department! However with the advent of fast and accurate news sentiment algorithms using state of the art natural language heuristics, news data can now be provided to individual traders and analysts in a targeted and quantitative way that was not possible some years ago.

The news sentiment data is provided by Dragonfish LLC utilizing their patented news sentiment analytics engine and is incorporated with Screenulator's innovative technical analysis algorithms to provide a unique view of stock performance.

Stock news sentiment is collected and calculated throughout the day and provided as an end-of-day daily value. A 63 day z-score is also provided for comparison purposes; this allows for a quick assessment of significance relative to recent history. Additionally a 5 day (default) moving average provides the short term news sentiment trend.

The app is a collaboration with Screenulator by Joe Qi, who provides the automated chart pattern recognition and trendline screening, tiles portfolio and interactive charts displays, which facilitate a unique visualization of both technical and news sentiment data.

In the tiles view, stock portfolios are displayed as a grid, each stock being a square or a tile. The internal background color of the tile reflects the current price change, whereas the border color reflects news sentiment. Tiles can be arranged and sorted by various parameters including: price change, news sentiment, short term sentiment trend, z-score and more.

Selecting a stock from list or tile view displays a chart of the stock with news sentiment displayed in the lower indicator as well as the moving average bars indicating news sentiment short term trend. When the bars are green the news sentiment trend is positive and when red negative. Touching the indicator pane provides additional detail in a pop up window.
