Under the auspices of the Lyme Bay Fully Documented Fishery Project and funded by the Blue Marine Foundation and EFF, Succorfish have in conjunction with local stakeholders developed a Smartphone App to empower inshore fishermen to quickly and efficiently collect data on their fishing activity. The App has been designed to quickly and easily allow fishermen to record data, thereafter available in perpetuity to fishermen and any users they chose to share the data with. The underlying premise of the App is to make the process as simple and intuitive as possible, catering for various levels of IT literacy. At the very basic level the App can collect data on fishing activity and the process can take as little as 60 seconds to complete. More detailed data capture is also catered for, with the process driven by the user and their apatite to collect data. The App facilitates much more than just collecting data on fishing. It can also tap into the enormous wealth of wider environmental knowledge fishermen possess, giving them the tool to enhance their role as custodian of the seas. Often overlooked, fishermen spend more time on the sea and understand better than most how the marine environment functions and changes. By using the SuccorfishM2M Catch App, fishermen will be able to record their experiences to ultimately benefit their own businesses as well as the wider society, contributing to knowledge on fish stocks, climate change and invasive species to name just a few.
