A tartan is a 2/2 twill- i.e., over 2, under 2; each thread is offset by one thread from the previous thread; it is defined by a pattern called a 'sett'. The format for a sett to weave a tartan on this weaver is:

1. CN ... C/N where the '/' defines a pivot stripe which specifies that the tartan is Symmetrical: {ABCBA} -- the sett {ABC} is repeated in reverse order, pivotting around the C which is not repeated; most Scottish clan tartans are symmetrical.

2. CN ... without a pivot stripe specifies that the tartan is Asymmetrical: {ABCABC} -- the sett is repeated starting at the beginning.

It has long been recognized, particularly in Scotland, that the tartan twill is a formula for an extremely attractive work of art.

With The Tartan Weaver a myriad of tartans can be designed from a choice of 140 colors and thread counts. Tne pallet of 140 colors is based on the UNIX X11 named color values. The Hex values for the colors are also given.

Once the stripes (color and thread count for each stripe) are selected, the weaver draws the warp (vertical) threads and then animates the drawing of the weft (horizontal) threads.

'keyless' entry is provided for the selection of color and thread count.

The tartan stripe values may be edited.

Tartans may be saved or deleted.
