Professor Mahadevan is the Barbers' Company Professor of Surgical Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He possesses an honorary affiliation to the Academic Department of Surgery at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

Professor Mahadevan has written extensively on various aspects of surgical anatomy and is one of the editors of the current edition of Gray's Anatomy. He is co-author (with Professor Harold Ellis) of the popular textbook Clinical Anatomy. He is also a longstanding member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
