The origins of izakaya are the traditional pubs in old buildings frequented by Japanese salarymen who would, after a long hard day at work, unwind over large amounts of sake, wines and spirits together with snacks and still go home for dinner.
Not simply tapas or mezze, izakaya-style dining today elevates Japanese cuisine to a level of sophistication. Small plate dishes which include robatayaki, yakitori, sushi, ramen, soba chazuke and karaage are meant to be paired with sakes, shochus, beers, wines and spirits and to be shared around. This conviviality sets an izakaya apart from ordinary Japanese restaurants.
Today, izakaya-style dining is enjoyed all over the world by young sophisticates out for a good time with friends and family and are fast overtaking sushi and ramen restaurants in popularity as the first choice for a special night out.
Chef & Co:
Tomo Izakaya is the brainchild of entrepreneurial Singaporean restaurateur and F&B consultant Andrew Tan. Andrew who is recognized as one of the pioneers in Singapore’s F&B industry has opened well over 32 restaurants and chains both locally and internationally and brings his vast experience of conceptualizing and supervising menus for royalty and important personages (including Emperor Hirohito of Japan) to this exciting new venture.
During one of his frequent eating sprees in Japan, Andrew Tan stumbled upon the popularity of izakayas as he had the opportunity of experiencing firsthand the pleasures of the finest Japanese food prepared and served together with the best sakes and sochus in an inviting and enticing ambience. He was bowled over and went to introduce the vibrant izakaya dining concept to Singapore in 2008.
The restaurant, designed by award wining architecture firm Ong& Ong, has even won the prestigious CNBC Asia Pacific Property Awards-Interior Design Award 2009.
