Trait Cross is a simple tool to help determine genetic probability.
Features:
- Cross two genotypes and view the expected genotypic and phenotypic offspring ratios and percentages.
- Create custom phenotype conditions
- Save and load phenotype condition groups
How to use:
The first tab, "Cross", allows you to enter two genotype strings and cross them. Genotypes can be any length, however, genotypes longer than 6 allele pairs may freeze the device while loading. Clicking the cross button will display the genotypes below along with the predicted ratio. To view the percentage of a random offspring having this genotype, simply click on any of the ratios and the display mode will toggle.
To view predicted phenotypic ratios, you will first need to create the phenotype group. This application comes with 3 example groups: blood type, simple monohybrid dominance, and dihybrid dominance cross. Creating a phenotype group is simple. The following instructions will take you through how to set up a simple one:
1. In this example we will be creating a simple monohybrid phenotype cross where [T] is the allele for [tall] and [t] is the allele for [short]. (This is the "Tall/Short" example that is included in the application) In this case, T is dominant to t. Begin by opening the phenotype tab.
2. Click the "+" button and a window will appear.
3. In the first text box, enter the name of the first phenotype, in this case, "tall"
4. In the second text box, enter alleles that will cause this phenotype to be expressed. (Enter multiple alleles with no spaces). In this case, we will enter "T" because any genotype with this allele will be "tall"
5. In the third text box, enter alleles that will mask this phenotype or cause it not to be expressed. We will leave this blank because "t" is not dominant to "T"
6. Click create and you will see the phenotype that you just added. If you need to edit or delete phenotypes, you can click on them to reopen the editing window.
7. Click the "+" button again to create a second phenotype. This time we want to enter the following information: "short", "t", and "T." Since any genotype with "t" will not be short if it also has "T," we must add "T" to the masking alleles text box.
8. Now that we have both the phenotypes we need to cross, we can go to the first tab and try crossing different genotypes. Try entering the genotypes "Tt" and "Tt." To change the results to display the phenotypes, click on one of the displayed genotypes. If you wish to save a group of phenotype rules, clicking "save" in the phenotype tab will allow you to save the current phenotypes to the device.
