TravelAssist is designed to help users understand foreign language signs and documents. When travelling abroad, trying to read a Chinese menu in Sydney Australia or being an immigrant in a new land, the ability to read and understand foreign language material is incredibly useful, always important and sometimes crucial. TravelAssist is my attempt at solving this conundrum. It is the product of a year 12 Design and Technology High School course in New South Wales Australia.I hope it is a simple to use and useful addition to the evolution of these types of apps.I used open source software to build this app and in the spirit of this great tradition all source code for the app is available for download.In essence TravelAssist employs the camera on an iPhone to capture an image of a foreign language document. If the user is satisfied with the image they can pass that image to an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) library for processing. The current app uses the Tesseract 3.02 open source software. This is a great open source project and I am very happy to use it, endorse it and encourage its continued development.Once the user is satisfied that the captured and processed information is close to the characters they want to translate, the app will pass a query to Bing Translate. The returned result is displayed for the user and hopefully they have a good translation. By the same token however it is a pretty good attempt to solve a tricky problem and as such I am very proud if it.
