This is a research project of the Chair for IT Security Infrastructures of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.Main GoalsUp to iOS 7, several hardware identifiers were available that allowed apps to uniquely identify any iOS device. For instance, both the unique device identifier (UDID) as well as the hardware address of the WiFi module (WiFi Mac) were frequently used by advertising or tracking networks to relate personal data or usage patterns to specific users. As this posed a major privacy threat, Apple removed access to those identifiers within iOS 7.Within this project we want to find out, if iOS devices can still be uniquely identified by correlating freely available information provided by the iOS operating system.Fingerprinting ApproachUsing this app, we collect user-related data that is provided by the iOS operating system and is accessible by any app. This includes information on your device model, your system settings etc. In keeping with the motto "Show me your apps and I'll tell you who you are", we want to determine up to what extent your device configuration leads to an individual or even unique fingerprint. After collecting all unrestrictedly accessible data provided by the iOS operating system, the app will inform you about the uniqueness of your fingerprint. PrivacyWithin this project, we solely aim to investigate to what extend publicly available information provided by the iOS operating system can be used to uniquely identify users. To maintain your privacy, all personal data will be obliterated (by hashing) before it is delivered to our servers. Thus, we are able to determine the uniqueness of your data, by still preserving your privacy.
