What is Wake on LAN

Wake on LAN is a standard which allows a computer to be woken up by a network message.

Setting up Wake on LAN

In order for Wake on LAN to work the target system needs to support a number of things and to be configured correctly.

- The target server must support Wake on LAN, typically this has to be enabled in BIOS and system settings.

- The host and the MAC address must be known in order to wake up the server.

Using a router

If the server is behind a router, the following bullets must be fulfilled by the router:

- Support for Wake on LAN and have Wake on LAN enabled, e.g. routers with dd-wrt firmware.

- Forward port 9 to the target server.

- The host address must point to the router IP address.
