In 1972 the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted with the purpose of compiling a list of objects that are of extraordinary and universal significance und whose conservation is the responsibility of all humankind. In the face of the threat to unique ecosystems and cultural sites this has become more imperative than ever. All the cultural and natural sites that have so far been declared as being part of the world heritage are presented here in text and pictures. Currently, UNESCO’s list of world heritage monuments lists 911 cultural and natural sites located in 148 countries. Of these, 689 are cultural heritage and 176 natural heritage sites, while 25 sites are listed under both categories.The application provides the following possibilities for finding a World Heritage site:• Search by continent or country • Visual search via the gallery function of pictures of all World Heritage sites• Select a continent on the world map • Search by name of the World Heritage sites (full text search) With the help of Google Maps, each site worldwide can be pinpointed on the map as well as on a satellite photograph.The application contains the following information:• Pictures of the World Heritage sites • The total number of World Heritage sites • Location of the World Heritage site on the map and on a satellite photograph • Description of the World Heritage site• The country in which the World Heritage site is located• Labelling of those World Heritage sites that are situated in more than one country (transborder sites)• Year of inscription of the World Heritage site• Status of the World Heritage site• Is the World Heritage site classified as a site in danger?Further features of the application:• Favourites function• Picture gallery with slideshow • Use of the application in portrait or landscape format We welcome all suggestions from users.
