The Cure for Creative Constipation (aka Writer's Block)

Every writer has felt it. The pain. The pressure. The uneasy, queasy feeling that indicates a bout of Creative Constipation, better known as Writer's Block. Creative Constipation (CC) is an all-too-common affliction among the creatively inclined, and yet there's no real treatment for it.

Until now.

The WriterLax App exists to restart the flow of ideas, gently pushing the troubled writer toward relief. Unlike prompt applications, meant to spark new ideas, the WriterLax App is designed to apply to stories in progress. With randomly selected components in six categories (Situation, Relationship, Location, Prop, Emotion 1, Emotion 2), WriterLax is intended to move a story forward, using the writer's chosen characters and themes. You can also add and delete components, customizing the six category lists to better fit your genre and specific story.

Here's a sample scenario.

The writer is composing a story about Sally, who is trying to reach the coast in order to save her pet giraffe from being shipped to a zoo overseas. But partway through the story, the writer isn't quite sure what Sally should do to progress the plot. Enter WriterLax.

The App randomly generates the following components in the six categories:

Situation: [NAME] has a flirtatious encounter...

Relationship: ...involving an enemy...

Location: ...at a meal.

Prop: A toiletry item

Emotion 1: Curiosity

Emotion 2: Disgust

Resulting in this scenario:

Exhausted from her trip, Sally stops at a hotel. She goes to the hotel bar (LOCATION), where she orders some hot wings and tries to relax. A man buys her a drink, and some flirtation ensues (SITUATION). Little does she know that this man deals in animal trafficking and is looking for a giraffe he can send to his very wealthy client (RELATIONSHIP). At first, Sally is curious about this man (EMOTION 1), but when he starts to floss his teeth at the bar (PROP), she becomes disgusted (EMOTION 2).

Now, the writer can move forward with a new sub-plot. Does Sally still trust the man? Does he ever say what he does? Maybe he falls for Sally, and he turns over a new leaf. Maybe he pretends to be a friend, but eventually he betrays her.

And just like that, WriterLax takes effect, and ideas are flowing once again!
