If you already use Unifix Cubes and Cuisenaire Rods then this is a must have app for you! Take all the research supported activities for Unifix Cubes and Cuisenaire rods to your classroom on the iPad without having to carry the cumbersome blocks! The vBlocks has cubes and rods that work just as well as the expensive plastic blocks! Click and drag blocks to make patterns, connect cubes and learn about fractions! Two sizes of cubes are ideal for younger and older students. The vBlocks activities can start as early as 3 years old!
The vBlocks is 3 apps in one!!
1) "Make Pattern"
-------------------------------------
Building patterns is a research-‐supported tool to help students achieve higher success with algebraic reasoning. This app helps students create several different patterns at very early ages starting in pre-‐K and Kindergarten. Teachers should encourage students to build patterns with the “Make Patterns” option. During early lessons, students should be guided to build ABAB, AABAAB, and ABBABB patterns. As the students build confidence a third color can be introduced and ABCABC, ABBCABBC, ... patterns can be created. Also, hopscotch type patterns can be constructed as the app allows for work on vertical and horizontal axis. In addition, the “Make Patterns” activity will also facilitate a conversation of base ten, counting by fives and counting by tens.
2. "Make Towers"
-------------------------------------
The “Make Towers” activity builds on the “Make Patterns” activity and can be extended to students in Grades 1 – 12. This activity is another research-‐based problem-‐solving task that can be used to teach students about combinatorial tasks. Students can build towers three, four or five tall, using two or three colors and provide justifications for how they know they have found all possible towers. Another interesting task is building all towers four tall with three colors where the resulting towers must contain at least one of each color. The building towers activity is isomorphic (similar in mathematical structure) to several combinatorial tasks and can be used to map students’ understanding of several related tasks like counting the number of pizzas possible with a certain number of toppings, etc. This app can be used for very sophisticated counting techniques and can aid in students’ building of complex combinatorial ideas related to the Pascal’s identities, etc.
3. "Arithmetic using vRods"
---------------------------------------
This activity provides teachers with the invaluable tool of Cuisenaire Rods like manipulativeswhich help students understand and learn the basic concept behind fractions, addition, subtraction and other arithmetic.
