We are all bored at times.
And because boredom can be unpleasant, we found ways to "kill" it, just as it was a disease. Smartphones play a major role in this.
With the Borapp study we make a first step towards studying boredom and smartphone usage. Our long-term goal is the make the phone sensitive to boredom.
Imagine your phone
* suggesting more useful activities then endlessly cycling from one app to the other, such as addressing your todos, or
* encouraging introspection and reflection instead of senseless diversion.
If you are interested in accompanying us on our way there, and you own an Android phone, download Borapp from Google Play.
You can participate by installing and running this app on your Android phone. It will collect sensor data when your phone is in use and – at few times a day – ask for your emotional state, which you are encouraged to answer as often as you can.
We have carefully designed the app to be resource conserving: Internet will only be accessed via WiFi, never through your data plan, and the data collection has been designed with saving battery in mind.
The Borapp Study is a research project carried out by researchers from Telefonica Research, Barcelona, Spain and the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
Your participation is entirely voluntary. You can quit the study at any time by uninstalling the application. Any kind of usage and participation from your side will be welcomed.
