If you’re over the age of 50, you probably check your cholesterol and go to a cardiologist – but are you screening your eyesight? Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness for people over the age of 50, and the most common cause of blindness in the western world.More than 1.75 million people in the United States currently have some form of age-related Macular Degeneration, and that number is expected to grow to over 3 million people by 2020. What’s more is that AMD, along with other eye diseases, can be treatable through early screening and detection. And the earlier the diagnosis, the more likely an eye care provider can improve the outcome for the patient. The goal of this application, which was developed by an ophthalmologist, is to screen your eyesight for AMD on a regular basis. To do this, the app uses two eye screening tests: the Mini Snellen and the Amsler Grid. The Mini Snellen tests central vision, or the bull’s eye portion of eyesight (when thinking of a ringed target). The Amsler Grid tests the outer target area outside the bull’s eye area.In addition to AMD, these screening tests also warn of other potential eye problems or diseases that are subtle, painless and difficult to detect. These problems include cataracts, vitreous hemorrhage (new floaters), diabetic retinopathy and various forms of glaucoma (open angel glaucoma: OAG). And for those with high blood pressure, changes in your eyes can put you at increased risk for eye disease.Other Features Include:- Create your personal eye screen profile- Set reminder alarm for regular screenings- Research links to medical information about eye diseases - Locate an eye professional near youDisclaimer:This vision screening application is for information only. It is not a replacement for an eye exam by an eye doctor.
