Motor Load listens to the vibrations from an AC induction motor and based on the pitch of those sounds, calculates and displays the degree of loading on that motor. This can be a useful preventative maintenance tool for motors used in critical industrial applications.

AC induction motors run at a speed somewhat below their synchronous speed. The degree of slippage from synchronous speed depends on the mechanical loading of that motor. When the loading increases, this app can detect the slight drop in motor speed and perhaps avoid costly system downtime.

Although valid results may be obtained with the built-in microphone in iOS devices, best results are obtained by plugging in a contact microphone, such as the ones used to tune guitars. By clipping a contact microphone somewhere on the motor frame or mounting, this app can pick up the motor vibrations and measure the RPM, and hence the loading.
