New wave music is a genre prominent in the latter part of the 1970s up until the middle of the 1980s. It involved the use of instruments such as bass, guitar, drums, piano and synthesizers. New wave traces its origins mainly from punk rock, but it has been influenced by ska, reggae, funk, glam rock, disco, bubblegum pop, pub rock, experimental and electronic music. For a certain period of time between 1976 and 1977, punk rock and new wave were interchangeable to some extent.

Among the several movements having close ties with punk rock in the 1970s, New wave stood out with its distinctly complex lyrics and music, apart from the use of instruments like synthesizers. With these distinctions and mainstream exposure on MTV, New wave has set out to become one of the authoritative music genres by the subsequent decade.
